this is going to be...

...one of my top ten films of 2007.

look both ways

a train crash, a death, a diagnosis, a frontpage, a chance encounter, a love story, some loneliness...

set against the background of suburbia, sweating in the aussie sun.

written and directed by sarah watt, and featuring many of her animations, look both ways blends superb acting performances and unpretentious dialogue with fast-paced, multi-layered photography and animated kaleidoscopes that twist and turn from life to death as the viewer tilts the lens.

the colours in this film are astonishing. i don't want to say too much. but i can't recommend this highly enough. for the six feet under fans amongst us, the fantasy sequences in this film, though realised in other media, are similarly shocking, bizarre and believable, reminding (and reassuring) us of the ways imagination and memory are woven into the pattern of our thoughts.

with the belfast film library resting in peace, it is good to know that there are still innovative films from other parts of the globe in commercial stores. go rent this one.
